• Ages: 2–6 years old

River Friends at the Shames JCC on the Hudson is described as having all of the adventure and excitement of big-kid camp with a focus on the needs of young campers ages 2–6. The campus has multiple areas for outdoor fun, including a new playground for climbing, a field for racing, a wooded area for nature exploration, a garden that provides fresh fruits and vegetables, a water slide and splash pad for cooling off, and a blacktop for riding scooters.

The camp director, Allie Scherich, brings more than 20 years of experience in education and has a master’s degree in early childhood education from Columbia University’s Teachers College, after studying theater and education as an undergraduate. Her background includes work as a nursery school head teacher, an educational consultant with Disney Theatrical Group, and leadership roles such as Program Director and Master Teacher at early childhood day camps and residential performing arts camps. She now leads the JCC’s youth theater programs in The Ark, is a mother of three, and is an active member of the community who lives in Sleepy Hollow. During the pandemic, she also worked as a labor and delivery nurse and supported families as she helped welcome more than 250 babies.

One parent shared that River Friends has been part of their family for many years with four children, mentioning activities such as karate, yoga, sports, and sprinklers, and noting how much the children learned and felt comfortable while swimming. Another parent described River Friends as a blessing for a 4-year-old son over the past two years, saying that counselors and staff care for each child and support and encourage their individual growth, and that the experience and friends made will last a lifetime.
