The Arts Center of the Capital Region was founded in 1962, and its mission is to enable people to create and to engage in the arts. It offers more than 500 classes each year, including programs for children and adults with disabilities, scholarships for all programs, and comprehensive training programs on the business of arts for area artists. Every year it distributes $90,000 in decentralization grants for artists who work in the community and provides grants to non-profits, art-based organizations, and artists in Albany, Rensselaer, and Schenectady counties. It serves 40,000 people each year from the eleven counties surrounding Troy and produces public art that puts art in the forefront of the civic experience. In 1989 The Arts Center of the Capital Region received the Governors’ Arts Awards for outreach into populations with special needs. It operates four contemporary art galleries and a 100 seat black box theatre and serves the Capital Region as a leader in arts advocacy, education, investment, and programming, with a stated commitment to the well-being of Troy as its core community and the Capital Region as its whole community.
