Columbus Museum of Art was founded in 1878 as the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts. It was the first art museum in Ohio to receive a charter from the state. The museum is led by Brooke A. Minto, Executive Director and CEO. Through its collection and programming, the museum states that it fosters creativity, broadens perspectives, and makes space for inspiration and renewal, sparking dialogue, energizing communities, and providing transformative encounters with art.

Columbus Museum of Art has long been a leader in arts education. In 1887, it merged with the Columbus Art School, beginning a century-long commitment to cultivating creativity and deepening public engagement with the visual arts. By 1982, the school, now known as Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD), became a fully accredited four-year institution, and in 1987 the museum and CCAD amicably separated, each continuing to advance its mission independently. In 2015, the museum completed a 50,000-square-foot expansion with the opening of the Margaret M. Walter Wing, which includes flexible gallery spaces, educational facilities, and public gathering areas. In 2018, the museum received a building at 632 Park Street and a selection of contemporary works from the Pizzuti family; this site is now known as the Columbus Museum of Art at The Pizzuti and hosts exhibitions, performances, and artist-driven projects.
