About

Tinkergarten Outdoor Classes offers 60-minute sessions that take place in a greenspace and follow a play-based outdoor curriculum. Lessons use expert-designed, open-ended, child-led activities that put nature at the core and are described as irresistibly playful and part science, part wisdom. The program includes on-demand lessons that families or teachers can play, pause, and replay anytime, along with free activities and insights focused on purposeful outdoor play.

• Schedule: 60-minute sessions, with on-demand lessons available anytime

Over more than 30 seasons, Tinkergarten Outdoor Classes has gathered data on its impact, including that 87% of families spend more time outdoors, 85% of kids show improved ability to focus their attention, 90% of kids play independently more often and for longer, and 93% of caregivers feel better prepared to engage their child in playful learning. Lessons are led by a certified Tinkergarten Leader, and the curriculum, coaching, and activities are created by educators. The program’s mission states that it helps families get outside to make the most of their kids’ early learning years through a play-based outdoor curriculum that guides parents in raising healthy, confident, and capable kids, and that it aims to make purposeful outdoor play doable for every family.

The program reports that, over the past decade, it has honed a unique approach to help kids become healthy, curious, creative, and caring learners, with brain-boosting outdoor play at the center. Tinkergarten Outdoor Classes is now part of Highlights for Children, and Tinkergarten can be found in High Five magazines. The program describes itself as “Tinkergarten. Your guide to purposeful outdoor play.”

Parents and caregivers describe a range of experiences with Tinkergarten Outdoor Classes. One parent, Andreina, says the learning style offers guidance without pressure and worked well for her shy and independent daughter. Another parent, Anna, notes that her children were highly engaged in each class and that the space for outdoor learning felt warm and positive. Melissa shares that Tinkergarten reminded her of the creativity and fun she experienced playing in the mud as a child, while Paige says she would not have thought to set up the activities herself and that they keep her child busy for the whole day. Other caregivers report noticing changes in how they interact with their children, including learning when to step back, being more patient and child-led, and asking questions like “What do you think?” and “What do you see?” instead of giving answers. One caregiver says Tinkergarten serves as a group of peers for their kids when preschool is not affordable, and another notes that Tinkergarten home classes are the best part of their daughter’s day and that she plays for hours afterward. A Tinkergarten Teacher describes one empathy lesson plan as “the most beautiful and absolutely brilliant way” they have seen to teach kids empathy.
