About
YMCA of Sandusky County Child Development Centers offers weekly swim lessons, field trips, daily gross motor skill activities, swimming, and recess in an outdoor playground. The School-Age Summer program includes daily swimming, weekly field trips, and nutritious meals and snacks. Classrooms at the centers use Chromebooks and Smart TVs.

Degreed teachers lead the curriculum, which includes daily lesson plans, and staff are described as knowledgeable. The centers use the Ages & Stages Developmental screening tool to assess fine and gross motor skills, communication, problem solving, and more, and they conduct ongoing assessments to evaluate each child’s progress. The program is open most non-school days and offers care for 2-hour delays, school cancellations, and scheduled school breaks, and transportation is provided to and from Fremont City and Bishop Hoffman Schools. Meals and snacks are provided during specific times, and at the Child Development Center located at the YMCA they are provided by the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). The school-age program is described as an extension of the elementary classroom, and the YMCA of Sandusky County Child Development Centers now operate at two locations. Learning technology at the centers has been provided by the Sandusky County Communities Foundation.
The Child Development Center at the YMCA of Sandusky County has earned the Gold Award (formerly five-star award), which is the top award offered by the Ohio Department of Children and Youth. The YMCA of Sandusky County was chartered in 1953, became the YMCA of Sandusky County in 1960, and moved to its current location in 1962, with later expansions and refresh projects including updates to the Child Development Center. In 2024, a second YMCA Child Development Center opened at Hayes Memorial UMC. The YMCA’s mission states that it is a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community by connecting all people to their potential, purpose, and each other, with a focus on empowering young people, improving health and well-being, and inspiring action in and across communities. The YMCA utilizes information from the Community Health Assessment compiled by the Sandusky County Health Department, its own Community Needs Assessment, and feedback from partners to offer programming to meet critical needs.
