The Open Campus and Juntos team advance the mission of Oregon State University and the OSU Extension Service by providing local access to education through community-based partnerships and culturally-relevant programming to help meet the needs of Oregon communities. Open Campus works with kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school students to promote college and career access. Open Campus and Juntos is a fully supported program area within the OSU Extension Service and houses 20 Open Campus coordinators statewide. Open Campus conducts locally-based needs assessments and cultivates partnerships, and programs are grounded in local partnerships and a statewide presence.

The Tillamook Tech Trek camp was created in 2014 and has continued as a partnership between OSU Open Campus Tillamook County, AAUW Tillamook, Tillamook Bay Community College, Tillamook School District #9, and Tillamook Estuaries Partnership. Tech Trek is a camp for 8th grade girls with the main focus of preventing girls from losing confidence in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Tech Trek is a national program of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and students must be nominated by one of their STEM teachers to be part of the Tech Trek camp. Open Campus has partnered with community colleges, regional economic development groups, K-12 education systems, universities, businesses, community organizations, and local government to serve and support Oregonians, and coordinators live and work within the communities they serve while partnering with local organizations to design programming that reflects the needs of each unique Oregon community.

The Open Campus pilot launched in late 2009 in Crook and Tillamook Counties. The leadership team includes Emily Henry as Open Campus Program Leader and Gina Galaviz-Yap as Statewide Juntos Director. Oregon State University Extension Service prohibits discrimination in all its programs, services, activities, and materials on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity (including gender expression), sexual orientation, disability, age, marital status, familial/parental status, income derived from a public assistance program, political beliefs, genetic information, veteran’s status, reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity.

A Yamhill County teacher shared, “This program legitimately changed the life for one of the girls from last year. She has pursued hydro engineering since being introduced to it last year, received special recognition at the State Science Fair from the navy, and is working through engineering in high school next year to continue that into college. Tech Trek is a great program, I could not speak highly enough of it the past two years!”
