• Ages: 9–18 years old
The program’s leadership team includes Coach Shawn Malloy, JS Nash, and Coach Donald Wilson. OBC fields teams at each grade for boys and girls in grades 4–12. OBC athletes are regularly evaluated and given feedback on areas for development and how to use their strengths. The program uses the game of basketball for crucible moments and as an analog to life, with time taken to discuss life events and share life lessons. The coaching staff use their network of coaching contacts at all levels to advocate for and promote athletes with the goal of obtaining scholarships for those who are qualified. Values are represented in a W.O.R.K. acronym of life lessons that are taught to players in practices and games.
Shawn grew up in Raeford, NC, attended Hoke County High School, and then Chipola Junior College, where he earned honorable mention All-American and helped lead the team to a state title before transferring to the University of New Orleans. In 2006 he began his professional career in Mexico, where he won MVP, and later played professionally in Argentina, Venezuela, Lebanon, and Japan, leading his team in Japan to a championship in 2013. After retiring in 2014, Shawn began coaching youth and high school basketball while working for Nike.
JS Nash was a three-time all-state selection in California and scored over 2,000 points at Rancho Verde High School, including 936 points in a single season. He was Riverside County player of the year, first team all CIF, and a two-time Sunbelt League MVP. JS played at Oregon State University from 2001–2005, earning the Lew Beck Award for top newcomer, the Paul Valenti Award for greatest desire and determination, and the Ed Lewis Award for leadership. In 2005 he began his professional career in Estonia and later played in Belgium and Holland, where he was a multiple All League selection, All Star, Player of the Year, and Team Captain. For the last eight years, JS has coached and trained many local athletes who are now playing college basketball from JUCO to Division 1 levels, and he is the Director of Basketball Operations and Head Boys Basketball Coach at Life Christian School.
Donald Wilson was a two-time first-team All-Los Angeles player at Dorsey High School, scoring over 2,000 points while making the honor roll as student body president. He played at the University of Portland, finishing 12th in career scoring, in the top ten in free throws made and steals, and was featured on SportsCenter for an overtime tip-in at the buzzer against Saint Mary’s. Donald played professionally from 2006 to 2012 in top leagues in Spain, Holland, and Hungary, and he began his coaching career with the Centennial Basketball Program in Washington.
Oregon Basketball Club states that it wants to be an asset to its community and that it believes its passion and gifts best combine to teach children the game of basketball and life lessons associated with it. The program’s stated belief is that if children are taught to Learn, Love, and Work Hard, they will contribute to and become the community the staff want to live in. The program partners with the student athlete, their parents, and their school coaches to maximize their potential and equip them to navigate their path to placement.
