About
Youth Volleyball at YMCA of Columbia-Willamette includes serving, passing, setting, and spiking, along with games that use both small-sided gameplay and full gameplay. The program also uses skill stations as part of its volleyball activities.
• Ages: 6–16 years old
• Schedule: Runs January 6–May 26, 2025, with a one-hour clinic meeting once a week on Mondays from 6:30–7:30 PM, separate practices that are 1.5 hours long once per week, and games played on Saturdays
The YMCA of Columbia-Willamette traces its history to 1868, when it hosted its first meeting in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Portland. Its stated mission is to empower individual growth and foster community-building in people from all walks of life through family, fitness, faith, and fun, and to serve the community in spirit, mind, and body. The Sherwood YMCA describes its principles as love, respect, honesty, responsibility, and service.
Program details note that volleyball “takes a few minutes to learn but a lifetime to master,” and that participants can develop focus, timing, and execution while playing. Information provided states that volleyball can burn over 90 calories every half hour of play, enhances hand-eye coordination, and that playing team volleyball gives young minds tools for success in life. The program description also states that participants learn volleyball fundamentals of passing, hitting, serving, and gameplay, and that YMCA Volleyball Camps focus on passing and serving through games, skill stations, and both small-sided and full gameplay.
Additional program notes state that teammate or coach requests are accepted with online registration only, volunteer coaches are needed for teams, referees are provided, and players receive a team jersey. The YMCA lists an Open Door program in which financial assistance is available to members and non-members, with requests processed on an ongoing basis, and assistance available to qualified participants. Families may cancel registration for full credit if the written request is received at least two weeks before the program start date; cancellations within two weeks of the start date incur a 20% cancellation fee with the remaining funds credited to the account for future YMCA programs; all program-specific supply fees are non-refundable, and no refunds or credits are provided after the program’s start date. The YMCA also notes community involvement with the Sherwood Food Pantry and a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross. One participant, Jessica, states, “The Y's volleyball program has given me the opportunity to learn, grow, and have a blast, all while making new friends and improving my skills on the court.”
