About

Youth Volleyball at YMCA of Columbia-Willamette includes serving, passing, setting, and spiking, along with games that use these skills. The program uses skill stations, small-sided gameplay, and full gameplay to focus on volleyball fundamentals of passing, hitting, serving, and gameplay. This on-going clinic meets once a week and works on fundamental skills through fun games and drills.

• Schedule: This clinic meets once a week for an hour, with practices 1.5 hours long one time per week and games played on Saturdays.

The YMCA of Columbia-Willamette hosted its first meeting in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Portland in 1868. YMCA Volleyball Camps at the YMCA of Columbia-Willamette help players of all abilities develop athletically, refine fundamental volleyball skills, and enhance their skill sets with a focus on passing and serving. In this environment that values teamwork and sportsmanship, young athletes master the building blocks of the game with specially designed programs for each age level, where players develop basic to advanced abilities and work towards achieving their full potential. Players receive a team jersey, and referees are provided. Teammate or coach requests are accepted with online registration only, and volunteer coaches are needed for teams.

The YMCA of Columbia-Willamette states that volleyball takes a few minutes to learn but a lifetime to master, and that participants can burn over 90 calories every half hour of playing volleyball. The organization notes that playing volleyball enhances hand-eye coordination and that playing team volleyball gives young minds tools for success in life. It also notes that participants can develop focus, timing, and execution while having fun and getting a workout. One participant, Jessica, says, “The Y's volleyball program has given me the opportunity to learn, grow, and have a blast, all while making new friends and improving my skills on the court.”

The YMCA of Columbia-Willamette strives to serve the community in spirit, mind, and body through child care, sports and fitness programs, summer camps, and philanthropic endeavors, and states that its mission is to engage the entire person—spirit, mind, and body. The organization serves a wide community, including more than 250 active older adults, through group exercise programs and a fitness facility. Its principles are defined as love, respect, honesty, responsibility, and service. Through its Open Door program, financial assistance is available to members and non-members, with assistance available to qualified participants because the organization states that everyone deserves a chance to be a community member regardless of ability to pay. Open Door requests are processed on an ongoing basis.

Families may cancel registration for full credit if the request is received in writing by email or mail two weeks before the program start date. Cancellations made within the two-week window are subject to a 20% cancellation fee, with the remaining funds placed as a credit on the account that can be applied to any future YMCA program. All program-specific supply fees are fully non-refundable, and no refunds or credits are provided after the program’s start date.
