About

AARP Foundation Experience Corps is an intergenerational volunteer tutoring program that engages adults 50 and older in one-to-one and structured tutoring sessions with students. The program uses a structured, evidence-based model that includes activities such as one-to-one tutoring sessions, structured tutoring sessions, and Zoom webinars. Intergenerational relationships between tutors and students are at the heart of the program.

• Ages: 6–9 years old
• Schedule: In-person structured tutoring sessions in one-to-one settings, with two 30-minute tutoring sessions a week throughout the school year

Tutors in AARP Foundation Experience Corps receive at least 20 hours of training each year, including 16 hours of pre-service training. The program is housed locally at Metropolitan Family Service, whose mission is to promote equity, help people gain prosperity, and build a connected community for all ages. Metropolitan Family Service has been part of the Portland community for over 75 years and has collaborated with key community partners since 1950. AARP Foundation Experience Corps is an AmeriCorps National, Volunteer Generation Fund and VISTA grantee and receives additional support from the Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Program. Metropolitan Family Service has been recognized with a 2025 Philanthropy Impact Award from the Portland Business Journal. A principal at an Experience Corps school reported that an Experience Corps mentor worked with a reluctant reader who became engaged in school, happy to attend classes and sessions, and identified as a reader.
