About

Children’s Healing Art Project (CHAP) – Healing Arts Programs offers activities such as painting, abstract painting, clay sculpture, large-scale puppetry, and chances to speed paint with your mom. Each CHAP art interaction is customized to the needs, preferences, and abilities of each child. Art experiences are used to help children cope with pain and regain a sense of control over their lives, and to promote bonding and reduce stress for families.

• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: At local hospitals, CHAP teaching artists provide 25 hours of free onsite art-making per week.
• Price: Our innovative and inclusive healing arts programs are provided free of charge to children, teens and families affected by pediatric illness, disability, or special need. Our award-winning seasonal art workshops are open to the general public and the kids we serve, with all proceeds directly supporting our free arts programming for children facing medical challenges.

Children’s Healing Art Project (CHAP) was established in Portland, Oregon in 2006, and since 2006 has provided more than 150,000 healing art experiences in local hospitals and across the Portland area. Hospital programs provide creative outlets for pediatric patients and families during hospital stays and visits, and Art Club is an extension of in-hospital programs that takes place at the CHAP Art Studio and in the community with mission-based partners. CHAP in a Box brings quarterly themed boxes of art supplies, including materials for painting and clay sculpture, directly to children’s homes, with a quarterly delivery sent to each child and sibling. Seasonal art workshops are described as award-winning and are open to both the general public and the children CHAP serves, and CHAP is a registered 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization.

Children’s Healing Art Project (CHAP) states that it brings the healing power of art to children and families facing medical challenges and envisions a future where every child, regardless of health circumstances, has access to art to enhance overall well-being. The program’s arts offerings are described as innovative and inclusive, and children are known for their creativity and ingenuity rather than by their disease, diagnosis, or disability. A parent of a pediatric patient at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital shared, “Living in the hospital for 7 months with my child was scary - but when it was CHAP time, we left our fears at the door so we could be in the moment with each other. CHAP truly has healing powers in art. Pure love = CHAP.”
