Airway Science for Kids, Inc. (ASK) was founded in 1992. The organization serves youth ages 10–21 in acquiring the fundamentals of aviation and aerodynamics and the applied mathematics and engineering that drive them. While open to all youth, the organization focuses on increasing STEAM exposure for underserved youth, including low income youth, youth of color, female and LGBTQ+ youth, and youth with disabilities, and states a major commitment to stay with families from first engagement through completing education and beginning careers. Youth are introduced to aeronautics, aircraft building, commercial space and solar system related careers, drones, and robotics. As youth enter high school, the Aerospace College & Career Exploration & Selection System (ACCESS) offers a way to learn about a variety of aerospace careers and choose which careers they want to learn more about, and upon completing ACCESS, students are matched to mentors, work experiences, and internships. For 30 years, Airway Science for Kids has served the Black community in Portland and other historically underrepresented youth, now reaching over 4000 individuals each year in Portland, Hillsboro, and Vancouver, Washington, including BIPOC youth, LGBTQ+ youth, youth identifying as women, individuals with disabilities, youth living in low-income homes, and youth in foster care. The leadership team includes Bob Strickland, a retired Air Force auditor and aeronautics enthusiast who is described as passionate about working with Portland’s hard-to-reach youth.
