Aaron Milam is the head instructor and is a black belt under Rey Diogo and John Danaher. Aaron opened Renzo Gracie Academy Portland in 2013. Kids classes are taught by seasoned instructors with years of experience working with children, and all techniques are taught with a safety-first mentality that allows students to apply techniques on resisting partners. The program is described as practical self defense, sportsmanship, and fun, and as part fun, part discipline, part games, and part serious training. The Renzo Gracie Youth Program states that it is designed to provide a safe environment for children to learn how to defend themselves while having fun and that it helps to develop confidence, self-respect, and responsibility by focusing on mutual welfare and respect. The kids program is described as without peer in Portland, and Renzo Gracie Portland states that it sets the standard for martial arts instruction in Portland and offers world class instruction in a friendly environment with a world class team. The team is described as always looking for new training partners and having some of the friendliest, respectful, and fiercest girls and boys around, and the material taught to students is described as never watered down. New prospective students are invited to attend a free trial class, and families can schedule a free first class. One gym parent reports that their kids have been training there for 4 years.
