Girls Build is a non-profit organization based in Portland, OR, inspiring curiosity and confidence in girls through the world of building. Since its beginnings in 2016, where 60 girls attended two weeks of camps, Girls Build has grown to now working with close to 500 girls over 9 summer camps each year, and since 2016 they have taught over 4200 girls through summer camp and after school programming. The organization offers programming for girls teaching the basics of multiple trades via summer camps and after-school workshops, and it is expanding from summer camps into after-school programming at its warehouse. Girls Build offers free programming to any child involved in the foster care system, including summer camps, after school programming, weekend programming, and spring break camps, and through this foster care program, over 80 foster care kids have attended camp for free. The majority of participants attend on scholarships, and Girls Build has awarded over 1450 partial or full scholarships.

Carpenter Katie Hughes has 10 years of teaching building summer camps experience and serves as Executive Director, alongside Ev Hu, Program Manager; Anjeanette “Bubbles” Brown, Executive Director of Fun; Becca “Soda Pop” Schulze, Lead Instructor; Ashley Bos, Administrative Genius; and Joleen Hess, IT & Stuff. A participant named Gabii, age 8, shared, “Building makes me feel like I can do whatever I want, because I can do whatever I want. I can be creative in my own way, and I can just do anything.” Girls Who Build features candid and arresting photographs of forty-five girls showing off their power tools and can-do attitudes, with profile interviews and tips.
