About
Girls Inc. Eureka! is a 5-year STEM magnet program where youth take part in exciting lessons and activities that explore STEM through inquiry-based, critical thinking, and hands-on activities. The program also includes complimentary activities focused on making healthy choices, emerging adulthood, life skill development, physical activity, mentoring, post-secondary preparation, networking opportunities, internships, field trips, project-based learning, Monthly Learning Sessions throughout the school year, and a Fifth-Year Leadership Project. Cohorts of youth stay together throughout their five years in the program and build community with their cohort.
• Ages: 13–18 years old
• Schedule: Three summers of four-week summer camp at a local college or university, with camp taking place Monday–Friday from 9:00am–3:00pm, plus two summers of internships and Monthly Learning Sessions throughout the school year
Participants learn and grow in three summers of four-week summer camp at a local college or university, then display leadership and engage in project-based learning in two summers of internships. Throughout the program, participants explore many STEM industries and activities via Monthly Learning Sessions during the school year and demonstrate their leadership and accumulated learning in their senior year Fifth-Year Leadership Project. Participants display academic motivation and self-efficacy, have self-confidence with respect to STEM, make healthy choices about physical activity, and take advantage of mentoring, post-secondary preparation, and networking opportunities.
Girls Inc. of the Pacific Northwest states that its mission is to build a new generation of strong, smart, and bold leaders in Portland, Seattle, and SW Washington by equipping girls to reach their full potential through resources, relationships, and learning opportunities. The program is open to youth who identify as girls, non-binary, transgender, or youth who are currently exploring their gender identity or expression, with priority given to First Generation youth, BIPOC youth, LGBTQIA+ youth, and youth from low-income households. The Eureka program is conducted in English, and translations are provided for family members’ comfort and understanding.
The Eureka! program is described as a community-wide effort that involves partnerships and interactions with schools, community-based organizations, and local businesses and corporations, with partners providing volunteer support, field trips, and funding. Leadership for the program includes the PDX Eureka! Manager, Sara Fenton, and the SWWA Eureka! Manager, Rose Flores. One youth participant shared, “I love Girls Inc. PNW because it's a space where I can be whoever I want to be.”
