About
Girls Inc. Eureka! is a five-year STEM magnet program where youth take part in exciting lessons and activities that explore STEM through inquiry-based, critical thinking, and hands-on activities. The program includes project-based learning, complimentary activities in making healthy choices, emerging adulthood, and life skill development, as well as field trips. Participants also engage in Monthly Learning Sessions throughout the school year, internships during their high school years, and a Fifth-Year Leadership Project.
• Ages: 13–18 years old
• Schedule: Five-year program that includes three summers of four-week summer camp and school-year Monthly Learning Sessions
Girls Inc. Eureka! is a 5-year STEM magnet program for 8th–12th grade youth, where cohorts stay together throughout their five years in the program. During three summers, participants attend four-week summer camps at a local college or university in a college campus environment. In two additional summers, participants take part in internships and display leadership and engage in project-based learning. Throughout the program, youth explore many STEM industries and activities via Monthly Learning Sessions during the school year and later demonstrate their leadership and accumulated learning in their senior year Fifth-Year Leadership Project.
The program includes hands-on, minds-on, untimed, and ungraded opportunities for guided exploration and skills and knowledge building, and youth test themselves mentally and physically. Participants and their families are introduced to the requirements, processes, and resources that will make higher education and STEM employment more accessible. Participants build community with their cohort, display academic motivation and self-efficacy, have self-confidence with respect to STEM, make healthy choices about physical activity, and take advantage of mentoring, post-secondary preparation, and networking opportunities.
Girls Inc. Eureka! programs are open to youth who identify as girls, non-binary, transgender, or youth who are currently exploring their gender identity or expression. Priority is given to First Generation youth, BIPOC youth, LGBTQIA+ youth, and youth from low-income households. The Eureka program is conducted in English, but translations are provided for family members’ comfort and understanding.
Girls Inc. of the Pacific Northwest states that it is building a new generation of strong, smart, and bold leaders in Portland, Seattle, and SW Washington. The Eureka! program is a community-wide effort that involves partnerships and interactions with schools, community-based organizations, and local businesses and corporations, and these partners provide volunteer support, field trips, and funding for the program. The PDX Eureka! Manager is Sara Fenton, and the SWWA Eureka! Manager is Rose Flores. One youth participant shared, “I love Girls Inc. PNW because it's a space where I can be whoever I want to be.”
