Flying Tortoise Kung Fu offers training in Chinese Internal Martial Arts, Chinese Long Fist Martial Arts, Capoeira, and Chinese Martial Arts. Students can study specific styles such as Bagua, Taiji, Pigua, Paochui, Beijing Kung Fu, Northern Chinese Kung Fu (Gong Fu), long fist styles including paochui, sanda and pigua, internal kung fu styles including taiji, bagua xingyi and paochui, and the grappling style shuaijiao. The program also includes activities connected to Gong Fu Cha, or Chinese tea ceremony, and Capoeira and Brazilian culture.
• Schedule: The 3rd Sunday of every month is (Sparring) Church, which is for full contact work, and meets at 6:30am for Beijing Kung Fu.
Mouthguards are necessary for (Sparring) Church. Flying Tortoise Kung Fu offers both drop-in classes and enrollment classes. The studio is described as a safe and supportive training environment and an inclusive, LGBTQ+ affirming, BIPOC welcoming, woman managed studio.
Shifu/Professor Joey Haber is the lead instructor and founder of The Flying Tortoise Academy. Joey was first exposed to martial arts in 1988 and began teaching in 1999, and has taught at over a dozen sites including the Inosanto Academy in Marina Del Rey. His studies have taken him to China, Brazil, California, Japan and Hawaii. Parallel to his Kung Fu practice, he maintains a close relationship with Oahu-based Capoeira Mestre Kinha and holds the rank of Professor under Mestre Kinha.
In April of 2024, Joey Haber became the first American Master of Cheng Baguazhang formally recognized by the Chinese family in a generation. He was also made the first non-Chinese Cheng Style Bagua KaiMen in a generation, with permission from his Bagua master and the Cheng Association in Beijing to create disciples and masters of his own. Flying Tortoise Academy has existed under various names since 2010 in Portland, Oregon, and was codified in 2016.
The program states that it provides students with top quality martial arts in a safe and supportive training environment and welcomes everyone from the hobbyist to the seasoned hand. The studio hosts Martial Arts Masters at the school and shares them with the student base. Staff visit schools to provide presentations on Capoeira and Brazilian culture, Chinese Martial Arts, or Chinese Tea Ceremony (Gong Fu Cha). The school describes itself as the only school in the world that is lineaged in and teaches both Liang style Bagua and Cheng style Bagua, and notes that each discipline is informed by ongoing connections to masters in China, Brazil and beyond.
