About

NW Dance Project Youth Programs include youth summer dance and are part of NW Dance Project’s broader offerings. The organization also offers drop-in dance classes for adults and teens in styles such as ballet, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, conditioning, and fitness.

NW Dance Project was founded in Portland in 2004 by dancer, mentor, and choreographer Sarah Slipper. Its mission states that it celebrates, supports, and represents excellence in dance, creates and performs original contemporary dance works from choreographers around the world, and provides dance training for all while performing, educating, creating, cultivating, and championing diversity and engaging public appreciation of dance. NW Dance Project is described as an award-winning, bold, and innovative contemporary dance company that performs an all-original repertoire from a select roster of accomplished choreographers and new creators in contemporary dance. The organization is described as “changing the way dance is created” and “a laboratory, factory and repository for risk-taking new works from the next generation of choreographers from Europe and North America,” and has been called “an essential part of the city’s arts scene” by The Oregonian, featuring “some of the best dancers you will ever see” according to the Calgary Herald, “the it company...one of the most dynamic dance troupes in the country” by Oregon Public Broadcasting, and “a company of slick, skilled dancers” by The New Yorker. NW Dance Project engages individuals and communities with dance through accessible performances by their company, studio sessions, dance samplers, outdoor performances, special events, master classes, collaborations with other artists, and conversations with artists. The organization brings performances to streets, coffee shops, hospitals, and escalators in shopping malls, offers an ongoing cost-free Dance Moves program for young, challenged members of the community, and holds free public performances as often as possible.
