NW Dance Project Youth Classes + Intensives is part of NW Dance Project, which was founded in Portland in 2004 by dancer, mentor, and choreographer Sarah Slipper. NW Dance Project is dedicated to creating and performing original contemporary dance works and to providing dance training for all. The organization states that it believes dance is for everybody and every body and is dedicated to the fair, just, and equitable treatment of all races, cultures, national origins, ages, genders, gender identities, gender expressions, religions, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic statuses. NW Dance Project is described as an award-winning, bold, and innovative contemporary dance company that performs an all-original repertoire and has been dedicated to the creation and Portland premiere of nearly 300 original contemporary dance works. Dance International Magazine has described NW Dance Project as “changing the way dance is created” and “a laboratory, factory and repository for risk-taking new works from the next generation of choreographers from Europe and North America.” Reviews have called the company “an essential part of the city’s arts scene,” “some of the best dancers you will ever see,” “the it company...one of the most dynamic dance troupes in the country,” and “a company of slick, skilled dancers.”

NW Dance Project’s mission states that it celebrates, supports, and represents excellence in dance, and that it performs, educates, creates, cultivates, and champions diversity while working to deepen public appreciation and support of dance. The organization engages individuals and communities with dance through accessible performances, studio sessions, dance samplers, outdoor performances, special events, master classes, collaborations with other artists, and conversations with artists. It brings performances into streets, coffee shops, hospitals, and escalators in shopping malls, offers a cost-free Dance Moves program for young, challenged community members, and holds free public performances as often as possible.
