Polaris Dance Theatre is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 2002, and over the past 17 years it has produced over 340 new works. Over 23 years ago the founders of Polaris Dance Theatre crafted the mission, “Through dance, we awaken the heart and enhance our humanity.” Its education program provides multi-discipline classes for participants 3 years old and up, including career track students, seniors, and students with developmental and physical disabilities, and it promotes inclusivity and accessibility while creating opportunities that cultivate connections in the community. Polaris Dance Theatre states that through collaborative work with artists and organizations through performances, classes, and festivals, its goal is to raise a collective voice, move hearts, open minds, and start dialogs of hope and awareness through the art of movement and dance.

Artistic Director Robert Guitron has been choreographing and teaching dance in Portland for over 40 years and has taught, choreographed, and performed throughout the U.S., Italy, and Japan. Leadership roles listed for the organization include Artistic Director and resident choreographer Robert Guitron and Program Director Sara Anderson, with Sara Anderson also listed for general inquiries and studio rental and Robert Guitron listed for the professional company.

Polaris Dance Theatre presents two dance festivals annually: Groovin’ Greenhouse, the dance hub for the Fertile Ground Festival of New Works, and The Galaxy Festival in early August at Director Park in downtown Portland, which is described as a multi-day event that is free of charge to the community and features the rich culture and multi-disciplines of dance in the community. Past partnerships include site-specific works at the Mission Theatre, featured performances in the JAW Playwright Festival at Portland Center Stage, a benefit performance for Children’s Healing Art Project (CHAP), a collaboration with Broadway Rose Theatre Company as the featured dance company in The King and I, and a multidisciplinary performance event as a fundraiser for tsunami relief in Asia.
