About

Portland Child Art Studio offers preschool art classes, homeschool art classes, after school art classes, and summer camps. The program uses a developmentally appropriate and child-centered learning approach where teachers do not direct children to make art in any specific or “right” way and do not pass judgment on what the children create. Teachers act as a resource by introducing new art materials, discussing ideas and themes within art, and demonstrating new art techniques, with a focus on the enriching process of making art over the product that is created.

• Ages: 2–13 years old

The mission of Portland Child Art Studio (PCAS) is to support the perceptual development of children through artistic learning. PCAS is dedicated to supporting the perceptual development of children through artistic learning and believes in exploration, play, discovery, and joy as the foundation for a life-long relationship with art. PCAS is a 501c3 nonprofit child art studio that is committed to providing equitable access to quality arts education.

PCAS is committed to creating an environment that is diverse, inclusive, and equitable where all staff, teaching partners, families, children, and board members are treated with respect and dignity. PCAS will not tolerate discrimination, harassment, or bullying of any kind in regard to race, socio-economic status, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, nationality, or gender. PCAS acknowledges Portland’s historical role in the oppression of BIPOC families and children and seeks to participate in a culture of equity.

The Portland Child Art Studio was cofounded in 2012. The leadership team includes Devon Mitchell, Executive Director and cofounder; Hannah Mickunas, Founder and cofounder; and Kiana Lamberton, PCAS Director of Programs and Operations, along with teachers Zoe Foxe and Allur Duffy and teaching partner Jesse Martinez. Kiana Lamberton holds a BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art.

PCAS offers an outreach program at the Vibrant!. Before joining the PCAS team, Kiana worked with Vibe of Portland, where she helped bring arts programming to children across the city, partnered with schools like Skyline Elementary, and worked with SUN after-school programs to provide creative experiences for young learners.
