About
Portland Thorns Academy includes soccer and Futsal training, along with training sessions up to three times per week. Players have access to video analysis, including game film and video review sessions, and can attend informational sessions on the college recruitment process with options for 1 on 1 recruitment meetings. The program also offers monthly opportunities to interact with Thorns FC players and coaching staff, as well as chances to be ball kids at Thorns FC home games and observe First Team training.
The Portland Thorns Academy mission statement is to empower female athletes to develop into women of character and community leaders, and to prepare players for youth national teams, collegiate and professional opportunities in a positive, player-centered environment with a focus on a “One Club” mentality. The program includes a college resources and preparation program, all-expenses-paid video highlight tapes with LM Premier for all rising sophomores, and videotaping of all league and national event matches. Players receive individual development plans and evaluations, support from an Athletic Trainer at all games, and enrollment in Providence Play Safe Injury Management. The academy also includes recommendations to and scouting by U.S. Youth National Team scouts and college coaches, with regular attendance of college coaches at games and national events for high school age teams, potential training opportunities with the Thorns First Team, recognition or introduction at a Thorns FC home game, and training sessions that the First Team coaching staff will observe and run. Portland Thorns Academy notes that its players are selfless, supportive, and put community and inclusion before themselves.
