Small Wonders School includes freeplay, meaningful projects, monthly thematic units, and thematic explorations. The educational programs follow child-directed themes, with monthly thematic units based on the children’s interests. Children study a wide variety of themes, including bread, rockets, rainforests, car engines, plants, and fairy tales.

Small Wonders School offers high quality preschool programs with the convenience of childcare hours in an enriching full day childcare format. The programs are staffed by warm and gifted teachers in creative and playful settings with low ratios, and the environments are Reggio-inspired. Planning accounts for each of the Multiple Intelligences, and the program includes both directed and non-directed activities that encourage children to plan and think about what they are doing. Freeplay allows children to expand and incorporate their ideas through open ended materials, and projects allow teachers to provide scaffolded learning and acquiring of new skills. The program’s mission states that it aims to provide children with a safe and nurturing environment where they can mature on their own, yet be challenged to explore new concepts and ideas, and that friends are encouraged to participate at their own pace and level without competition or comparison. Small Wonders serves the NE Portland community with two locations, with the Hollywood location serving a community of 100 children and the Grant Park school offering a welcoming environment for 110.
