Prineville Swim Team offers swim team practices and swim meets that include freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, individual medley, and relay events. Swimmers can enter up to six individual events per meet plus relays, and the coach places swimmers in events depending on ability and past performance times. After a two week trial period, swimmers must be able to swim the width of the pool to continue with the team.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Practices are held Monday through Friday, tentatively starting on Monday, May 26, with afternoon practices during the school year and morning practices once school is out; meets run from Friday night through Sunday afternoon. • Price: Swim fees are $300 per season per swimmer, with a $25 discount for each additional child in a family; beginner swimmers may be allowed to swim for $250 at the coach’s discretion, with no discounts for beginners. Fees cover PST registration, monthly dues, splash fees for all scheduled meets, and team swimsuits, and can be paid in one lump sum or three equal payments; registration fees must be paid in full by June 1 for meet participation, scholarships may be available with a limit of one per family, and payment arrangements must be set up with the PST board before the season.
All swimmers are required to register with USA Swimming as seasonal swimmers, and parents are responsible for completing this registration directly with USA Swimming; PST pays the USA Swimming registration fees as a team expense. Age groups at swim meets are 8 and under, 9–10, 11–12, 13–14, and 15–18 for both boys and girls, and relay events are organized as 8 and under, 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under, and 18 and under, with the coach able to place swimmers outside their age group for relays. Officials at meets include a director, announcer, referee, starter, timer, stroke and turn judges, place judges, and a safety officer, and swimmers are required to swim in at least one meet within the Cascade East District to qualify for finals.
Halley Estes is the head coach, with assistant coaches Katie Catterson and Hannah Crockett, and additional questions are directed to PST board members. All teams in the Cascade East District attend and help at all meets, and parents from all teams are asked to assist with timing. As the host team for home meets, PST is responsible for planning and running the entire meet, and volunteers are needed for preparation, clean-up, concessions, food donations, and meet official roles such as timers, ribbons, and clean-up, with all parents required to help during the home meet.
Many team families use tents or campers to camp in parks next to pools at away meets, while others stay in motels or with friends and relatives. Recommended items for meets include the team suit, goggles, cap if needed, team sweatshirt, a list of races entered, towels, sandals, warm clothing such as a sleeping bag, blankets, and sweats, sunscreen and a hat, lunch or spending money, snacks like granola, fruit, juices, and cheese, and a lunch cooler, along with any overnight needs depending on where the family is staying; concession stands are usually available. Families are asked to label everything brought to meets, and the team is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
