About
iCan Shine offers recreational programs that include iCan Bike, iCan Swim, and iCan Dance for individuals with disabilities. The iCan Bike program is a five-day program where participants attend for 75 minutes each day. iCan Shine offers camp locations across North America and provides an online map of camp locations.
• Schedule: Five-day iCan programs offered in approximately 100 sessions each year in 35 states and Canada; iCan Bike participants attend 75 minutes per day for five days
iCan Shine provides quality learning opportunities in recreational activities for individuals with disabilities and creates an environment where each person is empowered to maximize their individual abilities. The organization began in 2007 with the iCan Bike program and introduced the iCan Swim and iCan Dance programs in 2015. iCan Shine is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization, and donations are tax deductible as allowed by law and, unless specifically requested by the donor, are not considered restricted and are confirmed with a receipt for tax reporting purposes. The organization collaborates with local program hosts to conduct approximately 100 five-day iCan programs in 35 states and Canada, serving nearly 3,000 people with disabilities each year.
Since 2007, iCan Shine has successfully taught approximately 30,000 people with disabilities to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle. Approximately 80% of the people who participate in the iCan Bike program learn to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle independently for at least 75 feet with no assistance by the end of the five-day program while attending for only 75 minutes each day. The remaining 20% leave programs accompanied by family members trained as spotters to continue progress at home.
One parent shared that her 21-year-old son Zach was not able to ride a bike at the beginning of the week but was riding his bike by day three of the iCan Bike program, and the family now looks forward to bike riding together. Another family member described how a 27-year-old rider named Keshav, who had tried for years to ride a two-wheel bike, began riding daily and gaining confidence in his riding ability after attending an iCan Bike session. A participant named Gigi described iCan Shine as a great program and expressed appreciation for the experience and the group.
