• Ages: 4–18 years old
Since 1998, MacGuffin Theatre & Film Company has grown young actors between 4 and 18 and has operated as a nonprofit theater company for 28 years. The organization presents 16 productions each season and has produced over 120 theater productions, 14 films, 1 documentary, and dozens of summer camps. It has taught, encouraged, and inspired over 6,000 young people from many ethnic groups and economic levels, and notes a total of 8,200 students since 1998. The Artistic Director is John Rea, and instructors are described as some of the best actors in the Philadelphia area whose leadership has created a family-like atmosphere. The mission of MacGuffin Theatre & Film Company states that it grows actors, gives young people a place to experience the entire acting process of theater and film, and produces original and adapted works that speak to challenges facing its students and community, within an inclusive education and producing company that creates a supportive, dynamic space for students as they discover their identity, gain self-confidence, and become advocates for the arts. Alumni have gone on to study acting at Temple University, Emerson College, New York University, Columbia University, Syracuse University, and Northwestern University. Several students act in regional theaters such as Wilma Theatre, Walnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia Theatre Company, and InterAct Theatre Company, on Broadway in productions including The Humans, Beauty and the Beast, Speech and Debate, and Scarcity, and in Hollywood films such as Spanglish, The To Do List, Margaret, The Good Student, Please Give, and The Village, as well as in commercials.
Testimonials from participants include: “MacGuffin was without a doubt a second home for me during my teen years! MacGuffin was a space where I was able to do what I loved most while growing into the person I am today. It also gave me one of the greatest communities I’ve ever been a part of.” (Molly McQuoid, Alum) and “Acting really brings out the best in me!” (Sydney Giocobbe, student). MacGuffin Theatre & Film Company reserves the right to use photos and/or videos taken during classes and performances for promotional materials and on the official MacGuffin social media pages only.
