About
First Tee – Pittsburgh offers golf classes that include putting, chipping, pitching, and playing full rounds of golf. The program uses fun and challenging activities, drills, and games, along with fitness activities in an indoor fitness area. Participants also have access to indoor Trackman golf simulators and can take part in travel experiences, volunteer programs, leadership opportunities through a Junior Advisory Board, and internship and ready-for-work programming.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: 6-week sessions year round, indoors and outdoors, with 6 classes per session; each class lasts 1.5+ hours for ages 7–18 and 1 hour for ages 5–6
• Price: Participants can play golf at the Bob O’Connor Golf Course for $1 per round; through a partnered membership organization, juniors can play at over 2,000 courses for $5 or less, with membership offered at a discounted rate of $25/year (regularly $40)
All equipment, including clubs, bags, balls, and tees, is provided at no additional cost, and no equipment or prior experience is needed to participate. The curriculum is organized by age groups (7–10, 10–13, 13–18) and integrates golf fundamentals and advanced techniques with activities that follow Key Commitments such as understanding and managing emotions, resolving conflicts, setting step-by-step goals, planning for the future, and appreciating diversity. Programs are described as all-inclusive, fun, and affordable, with robust financial aid available, and participants are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes or sneakers, hats, and sunscreen, while coming as they are even if their clothing does not match traditional golf attire.
First Tee – Pittsburgh states that it believes every child should have access to safe, enjoyable, high quality, low cost programs that build confidence, character, and life skills, and that its curriculum is centered around First Tee’s Commitment to Being a Game Changer®. The organization has partnered with a membership-based organization that works with golf courses across the US, Canada, and Australia to make the game more accessible and allow juniors to play for $5 or less. An alumnus, Luke Boldt, shares that, “Because of First Tee I have been given opportunities that have molded me into a successful leader and role model. I am inspired to make an impact on this world that is far greater than what the world expects of me.”
