About
Luminari Summer Camps for Teens offers weeklong experiences where teens can record, produce, mix, and master music, build cooking skills such as knife skills, following a recipe, organizing a meal, clean up, and utilizing a commercial kitchen, and take part in a cookoff competition and a final “Chopped” competition day. The camps also include activities in public speaking, body language, communicating effectively, negotiation, and engaging with peers and mentors. Participants may meet with diplomats, visit embassies, engage in negotiation simulations, and explore real‑world global challenges, including meeting ambassadors from the People’s Republic of China, Ukraine, and Mexico, and visiting museums and restaurants during a trip to Washington, D.C.

Open to students in grades 7–11 in southwestern Pennsylvania, the program’s mission statement notes that the competition challenges young people to reflect on diplomacy, leadership, and the power of communication in a global society. Multiple parents described Camp Delicious as a cooking experience where teens learned hands-on cooking skills in an industrial-style or commercial kitchen, with no lunch to pack because participants ate what they made at camp and sometimes brought home dinner, and several mentioned end-of-week cooking competitions. Parents and students described the “I Want to Be an Ambassador” camp as including techniques in public speaking, body language, and communicating effectively, a two-day trip to Washington, D.C., and visits to the embassies of the People’s Republic of China, Ukraine, and Mexico, with some students saying they became more confident asking questions and commenting during embassy visits.
Luminari runs the annual Luminari Award scholarship competition between November and February, which anchors the “I Want to be an Ambassador!” summer camp. The organization lists Luminari Award Merit Scholars and ESL Merit Scholars from 2012 through 2026, including students from multiple school districts such as Fox Chapel Area, Mt. Lebanon, North Allegheny, Carlynton, Avonworth, and others. Luminari is a registered 501C3 organization and also publishes Lumos, a bi-monthly newsletter that invites submissions of essays, short fiction, journalism, poetry, photography, cartoons, and illustrations, with one winning submission per issue receiving a $25 Target gift card and all submissions considered under terms of right of first publication. The program notes that it is open to students in grades 7–11 in southwestern Pennsylvania and that it has been chosen by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit and identified as “Our Partner in Education.”
