About

Christian Church of Wilkinsburg Youth Ministry & Summer Camps includes Sunday worship service, Bible study, retreats, and summer church camp. Youth take part in Youth Sunday on the first Sunday of every month, where they participate in worship and often go out for recreation afterwards. The program also connects youth with Project Peace summer camp, an annual Art and Talent Show for Peace, and service camps where youth groups work in the community and learn about racial disparities and urban poverty.

• Ages: 9–18 years old
• Schedule: Ongoing programs with Sunday worship at 10:30am, Monday evening Bible Study/Wise Women, monthly Marge's Free Shop and Cafe, and seasonal events such as summer camps and Santa's Open House

The leadership team includes Pastor Rachel Neil, who leads Sunday worship at 10:30am, Pastor Janet, who is trained to lead retreats on spiritual growth and has written four books, and Min. Cecilia Sims, who leads the Monday evening Bible Study/Wise Women. Pastor Janet’s books include “The 70 x 7 Forgiveness Challenge,” which was used as the curriculum for her teaching on forgiveness in the local jail. The ministry is part of an inter-racial, intergenerational church that describes itself as a “come as you are” community within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and offers monthly Faithful Conversations about racism and hatred with members of the church and other Disciple congregations.

The church describes itself as a mission outpost in its urban neighborhood and takes the lead in organizing local churches and non-profits in responding to youth violence through community prayer vigils, Project Peace summer camp for youth, and an annual Art and Talent Show for Peace. It also offers Marge's Free Shop and Cafe, a free store with clothing, small household items, and free food, and hosts Santa's Open House on the second Saturday of December with a free photograph with Santa Claus, free food, games, toys, books, stuffed animals, and clothes for families with children 12 years old and younger. The church building includes space for community groups to hold events and is used by two African American start-ups as they build their ministries.
