WHAT Swim School offers recreational swim lessons, introductory stroke lessons, pre-competitive training, and high-performance training for elite athletes. The program also includes Parent & Toddler sessions and Adult Learn to Swim classes, with swimmers grouped in small classes by age and ability.
• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: 7-week sessions offered year-round, including a fall session from September 12th to October 29th, with fall registration opening August 13th at 7 AM
• Price: $125 for 7 35-minute small group lessons and $150 for 7 45-minute small group lessons; a $5 processing fee applies to group lesson cancellations made more than 24 hours before the first class
WHAT Swim School is part of the Woodland Hills Aquatic Team (WHAT), a nonprofit swim club founded in 1993 that focuses on developing athletic skill and life values such as responsibility, teamwork, discipline, determination, patience, work ethic, confidence, and pride through structured training, technique instruction, and team-oriented unity. The program is led by Swim School Director Coach Anna, along with Coach Ed Denny, longtime coach Hosea Holder, a committed coaching staff, and an active board of directors and parent volunteers. Coach Ed Denny led the men’s and women’s swimming teams at Fairmont State University from 1992 to 2001, guided them through a transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II, coached athletes who earned numerous All-American honors and a national championship title, received multiple “Coach of the Year” awards, and was inducted into the 2025 Fairmont State Athletics Hall of Fame. Longtime coach Hosea Holder is described as a stroke enhancement specialist with more than five decades of experience.
WHAT Swim School and the Woodland Hills Aquatic Team operate under the umbrella of Allegheny Mountain Swimming and USA Swimming and follow guidelines and rules set by the CDC, Allegheny County Health Department, and Woodland Hills School District. Scholarship and grant options are available for both Swim School and Aquatic Team programs. WHAT Swim School and Aquatic Team close whenever the school district where the day’s program is being held closes for the day or cancels all after-school programs, and make-up lessons are only offered if WHAT Swim School cancels a class.
Swimmers enter through a designated high school entrance, check in with a lifeguard or instructor, and wait away from the pool edge as directed by staff, leaving belongings in the designated area. Parents or guardians may accompany their child to check-in and watch lessons from spectator seating, and for swimmers aged 6 and under, one parent or guardian is allowed on the pool deck to assist with safe entry and exit. Locker rooms are open only to swimmers under 18 years old, and swimmers who do not need adult assistance may use the locker room bathrooms, while those needing help use restrooms near the balcony spectator seating area or designated changing areas. Families are encouraged to have swimmers arrive ready to swim, and after class, swimmers under 18 who can change independently may use the locker rooms or pull clothes over their swimsuits, while those needing adult help use the specified restrooms or pull clothes over swimsuits to exit.
