About

Austin Tennis Academy Camps offer tennis instruction that includes private lessons, group lessons, and winter tennis camps. Camps are described as being designed to provide development of a child’s physical, mental, technical, and tactical performance levels, with a focus on developing “citizens of significance, not just accomplishment.”

Austin Tennis Academy Camps are part of a program whose mission is to help junior tennis student-athletes reach their full potential on the court, in the classroom, and in their personal life. The leadership team includes Jack Newman, CEO of Austin Tennis Academy, along with Coach Doug Davis and Eric Schmidhauser. Groundbreaking for the Austin Tennis Academy facility took place in March 2003, and construction was completed in mid-October 2003, after Coach Newman, Eric Schmidhauser, and Coach Davis left St. Stephen’s in 2002 to found Austin Tennis Academy. The academy added its own private, fully-accredited on-campus school known as ATA College Prep, which includes dedicated academic classrooms. The facility includes 12 hard surface courts, 2 Italian red clay courts, a 3,200-square-foot state-of-the-art fitness center, and a full service pro shop.

At the founding of Austin Tennis Academy, Coach Newman committed to raise $1 million over the life of the business for a local charity called A Glimmer of Hope, which does projects in Austin and in Ethiopia. ATA players, parents, and coaches have raised funds to drill numerous water wells and build educational and medical facilities in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, and members of the ATA community, including students, have traveled to Ethiopia on three occasions to participate in the opening of schools, water wells, and other projects. Austin Tennis Academy also holds an annual fundraising event called the Shootout for the Austin Athletics Scholarship Foundation, a 501(c)3 charity that supports deserving student-athletes pursuing a disciplined lifestyle, and after nearly a quarter of a century of holding the Shootout, ATA has raised more than $2.2 million that have been awarded in scholarships to dozens of junior players who have a philanthropic spirit and commit themselves to giving back and making a positive impact in the world.
