About
Katy Art School offers art classes, summer camps, and workshops where students work through activities and projects that meet specific Art Objectives. The program includes an introduction to Art History, exploration of different mediums, and practice of various techniques. Students create and keep a journal and a portfolio throughout the year.
The mission of Katy Art School is to foster an atmosphere where the unique talents and perspectives of individual students can develop and flourish, and to create a student-centered environment where artists can advance knowledge and self-confidence. The program aims to expand and nurture the talents of active and creative minds through the introduction of diverse styles and various mediums, and to inspire students to enjoy art and have fun learning practical and relevant skills. Katy Art School describes itself as a real art school and not a craft class to keep children busy, and notes that small class sizes and student interest in art allow for more in-depth teaching. Its curriculum spirals through the Principles and Elements of Art Design, taking the Art TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills) into account to keep each activity age appropriate. Students are introduced to how art has progressed over time, meet a variety of artists spanning the ages through their work, and encounter different cultures. They learn the Elements of Art (Line, Shape, Form, Color, Texture, Value, Space) and the Principles of Design (Balance, Contrast, Emphasis, Movement, Pattern, Rhythm, Unity), and can advance at their own pace throughout the program.
