About

Texas Lions Camp offers activities such as riding a horse, rock climbing on its ropes course, and being part of a team in group-based programs. The camp emphasizes activities that require more than one person to accomplish, with campers participating in teamwork-focused experiences throughout their sessions. Campers graduate week after week after being introduced to actively pursuing friendships, goals, teamwork, and a passion that translates to life-long lessons for leading successful and purposeful lives.

• Ages: 7–16 years old
• Schedule: The summer begins with three sessions of “regular,” residential youth camps for children with physical disabilities ages 7–16, followed by Camp David and a session for children who have Down Syndrome; the next two weeks are set aside for campers who have type-1 diabetes with Dr. Ponder and the medical team, then Camp Discovery for children who have cancer or are in remission, and the summer ends with an innovative program for families.

Since 1949, Texas Lions Camp has been inviting children to make friends, have fun and get involved in a safe and supportive environment. The camp’s mission states that it was founded on the principle that every child is deserving of a happy childhood, and that by inviting children to participate in activities they may have otherwise believed out of their reach, the camp hopes to help them improve their self-esteem and step into their life's calling. The leadership is headed by Stephen S. Mabry, President & CEO. Texas Lions Camp has undertaken a five-year study to evaluate its camping program and the impact of what it means to be a TLC Camper, conducted by two peer-reviewed, PhD-level researchers from a Tier-1 Research University. The organization has also decided to implement aspects of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act as a best practice for the operation of Texas Lions Camp as a corporation, and it meets the requirements to file both the 990 and 990T information returns.

Community involvement is connected to Lions in Texas, with information about becoming a Lion and a description of Lions as 1.4 million caring men and women serving together so they can make a lasting impact and change more lives. One testimonial from Stephen S. Mabry describes self-esteem as one of the most important attributes a person can possess and calls Texas Lions Camp “so much more than individual achievement – it is lending your story to help others value theirs.” A camper named Stetson describes Texas Lions Camp as “built for people like me,” saying that for one week every year he lives in a place built for him and calls it “heaven on earth for kids like us.” Another camper, Katharyn, says that Texas Lions Camp gives her the opportunity to make choices to prepare for the future and that she wants to live at the camp.
