About

Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary Youth Programs include activities such as Keeper Summer Camp, Homeschool & Preschool Day, Homeschool Day, Scout Badge Workshops, and birthday parties for children on Saturdays and Sundays by reservation. The programs also feature Night Hike: Bat Chat, other Night Hikes with Heard Trail Guides, Bird Walks for beginner and intermediate birders to learn bird spotting and ID techniques, and access to the Texas Nessie Plesiosaur Fossil Exhibit. The programs take place within a 289-acre nature preserve and natural science museum that includes over 6.5 miles of self-guided or interpreted nature trails through habitats such as Blackland prairie, wetlands, bottomland forest, upland forest, and white rock escarpment.

Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary was founded in 1967, and the museum opened on October 1, 1967. It is a private 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that serves more than 100,000 visitors annually. Its mission is to bring nature and people together, including providing a place where future generations can enjoy native Blackland Prairie in a state similar to what it once was.
