About
CommuniKids offers preschool, afterschool, Free DC Pre-K, summer camp, language classes, and language enrichment classes. Afterschool care includes homework help, fun games, and physical activity, and language classes incorporate music, dance, arts and crafts, and conversation.
• Ages: 1–8 years old
CommuniKids was founded in 2005 by Jeannine Piacenza and Raúl Echevarría. The program expanded to Falls Church in 2007, established two full-time preschool programs in 2009, and both schools received NAEYC accreditation in 2012. CommuniKids is one of only 8% of preschools in the United States with National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Accreditation and has the highest accreditation from national and local regulating bodies (NAEYC, DC OSSE, PKEEP). Programs are offered in multiple locations in Washington, DC and Falls Church, VA, with programs for children ages 18 months–8 years that vary by location and language.
Teachers at CommuniKids are native speakers and use the ECSL immersive, science-based method cited by Harvard University, along with the research-based Frog Street Curriculum. The curriculum supports multilingualism, creates confidence, and raises social empathy and cultural awareness, with a focus on developing confident, multilingual children. CommuniKids offers Spanish, French, and Mandarin programs, including an active, exploratory summer camp program that gives children a chance to experience summer fun in another language, and afterschool care that develops and increases language fluency for elementary-aged kids while providing homework help, fun games, and plenty of physical activity. Language classes use leveled instruction and incorporate music, dance, arts and crafts, and conversation, and the program has a strong parent community and a commitment to promoting fair access to high quality multilingual early education.
CommuniKids Preschool partners with the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) to provide Free Pre-K at its DC centers for 3- and 4-year-old residents of the District of Columbia. CommuniKids is celebrating 15 years.
Parents describe CommuniKids as having kind, patient, and very skilled teachers who communicate with parents on a regular basis and are available by email or in person. Families note cultural diversity, different languages, and a focus on learning through play, and some parents report that their children have become completely fluent in Spanish and have thrived in a nurturing, play-based learning environment. Parents also highlight that their children enjoy a supportive, kind, caring environment with other children and families who care about being global citizens, and they mention seeing a huge smile on their child’s face at pickup.
