• Ages: 1–7 years old
CommuniKids Language Immersion Preschool, Afterschool & Summer Camp offers Spanish, French, and Mandarin programming through full language immersion school instruction in the target language. Falls Church programs include Preschool, Afterschool, Free DC Pre-K, Summer Camp, and Language Classes, with Falls Church summer camp language options in Spanish, French, and Mandarin. Falls Church summer camp serves ages 2½ to 7 years for Spanish, 2½ to 6½ years for French, and 3 to 6½ years for Mandarin.
The program uses a play-based, developmentally appropriate approach to early childhood learning with a theme-based, integrated curriculum that emphasizes global values and supports multilingualism, confidence, social empathy, and cultural awareness. Teachers are native speakers and are described as highly trained, experienced educators who use the ECSL immersive, science-based method cited by Harvard University. CommuniKids states that its mission is to prepare young children to become the global citizens of tomorrow by creating a joyful, playful, and nurturing environment that immerses students in a second language.
CommuniKids was founded in 2005 and is celebrating 15 years, expanded to Falls Church in 2007, and in 2009 the founders decided to establish two full-time preschool programs in DC and Falls Church. In 2012, both schools received accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and the program reports that it is one of only 8% of preschools in the United States with this accreditation, as well as holding the highest accreditation from national and local regulating bodies (NAEYC, DC OSSE, PKEEP). The organization was founded by Jeannine Piacenza and Raúl Echevarría.
CommuniKids Preschool is partnering with the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) to provide Free Pre-K at its DC centers for 3- and 4-year-old residents of the District of Columbia. Parent testimonials describe teachers as kind, patient, skilled at teaching young children, and regularly communicating with parents, and they describe the school as having cultural diversity, different languages, and a focus on learning through play. Families report that their children have become completely fluent in Spanish, that their children have thrived in a play-based learning environment, and that their children enjoy attending, as shown by smiles at pickup.
