The nature center includes historic pools that opened in 1961, a KinderWoods playground, hiking trails, and indoor spaces used for year-round opportunities to explore, gather, and learn. It offers year-round educational programs including school visits, summer camp, teambuilding activities, and rentals, and serves over 1,200 students each school year ranging from Pre-K to middle school through guided outdoor programming paired to Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs).

The mission of Camp Kum-Ba-Yah Nature Center is to offer quality outdoor enrichment day camp experiences for children in Central Virginia, providing opportunities to explore the natural world, experience personal discovery through new and challenging activities in a safe and encouraging environment, and cultivate friendships through shared responsibility and community. The leadership team includes an Executive Director, Kyle Simpson, who holds a Master of Science in Parks & Resource Management from Slippery Rock University and a B.A. from Southwestern University, and a Programs Director, Gage McAngus, along with a Board of Directors that includes a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. The staff and board seek out opportunities to work and play alongside their neighbors and state that they thrive on interaction with the community.

Executive Director Kyle Simpson describes being humbled to be trusted with this opportunity and inspired by the legacy and example of the organization in the community, and notes that his own children have attended camp and spent time with friends at Camp Kum-Ba-Yah Nature Center. He also states that in the months and years ahead, he will ask for help, ideas, and people’s best for one another as they work to keep and grow Camp Kum-Ba-Yah as a place of exploration, growth, and welcome for all, and that the warmth of community and a good space to gather brings out the best in everyone.
