Since 1997, more than 50,000 children have attended one or more of Club SciKidz’ science day camps or school programs, and the organization now offers 42 different themed science camps and 30 weeks of inquiry-based after-school science club experiences.
The Club SciKidz Richmond franchise is owned by Dr. Abhi Rathi, who has a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Pittsburgh, a master’s degree in Biochemistry, and a bachelor’s degree in Pathology. Bob and Sue Hagan, who are the owners and founders of Club SciKidz, have a combined 30 plus years of teaching experience and both hold a master’s degree in Education.
Club SciKidz describes itself as a place “Where Science and Technology Connect” and states that its unique science programs are designed to meet the needs of children ages 4–15. The company states that it is committed to demonstrating how science works in the real world through activities in areas such as veterinary medicine, robotics, forensics, video game creation, food science, paleontology, engineering, chemistry, biology, astronomy, oceanography, emergency medicine, and special effects. The organization states that it believes it has the most extensive science enrichment offering in the world, and that each unit is rigorously researched by science educators with the help of teachers and children, with lessons that engage students in observation, measurement, identification of properties, and experimentation involving life, earth, and physical science concepts.
Parent testimonials describe the program as having fun activities, kind and caring staff, and organized and well-run sessions, and note that children enjoyed the variety of activities, experiments, and interaction with other kids and counselors. One parent stated that their children attended five different camps in one summer and that this was their favorite, and another parent commented on getting to know the teachers and director and described them as thoughtful and caring.
