SwimRVA is a nonprofit organization described as the non-profit community hub for aquatics in the Richmond region, with a mission centered on access and equity. Its stated mission is to transform lives through aquatics and build a Drownproof Richmond, guided by three pillars: Swim for Safety, Swim for Health, and Swim for Economic Vitality. The organization’s Drownproof Richmond initiative includes increasing water safety awareness and providing free, top-quality learn-to-swim lessons to underserved youth, as well as cost-free, school-based swimming lessons for second graders across multiple districts in the Richmond region.

SwimRVA began as the Greater Richmond Aquatics Partnership, a collaboration of five educational and youth sport leaders focused on providing a world-class aquatics facility in Chesterfield. SwimRVA partners with civic leaders, schools, community groups, and organizations such as the YMCA, the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs, and VSU, and together with the YMCA of Greater Richmond provides every second grader in the community the opportunity to learn how to swim. The organization also partners with middle and high schools to teach essential swim skills and provide life safety certifications, and it has a stated $7 million annual economic impact goal related to aquatics and regional competitions.

The leadership team includes Adam Kennedy as Executive Director, Scott Bennett as Director of Communications, Kirk Chamberlain as Director of Facilities, Debbie Kelo, Ph.D., as Director of Programs, and Sean Gaffney as Director of Life Safety. The Autism Swims program is designed in partnership with behavioral experts and experienced aquatic educators. SwimRVA’s offerings also include an adult swim team, Running University, and Senior Wellness programs that feature low-impact aquatic exercise and social connection, as well as a water polo team described as one of two in Virginia and a training hub that certifies lifeguards, lifeguard instructors (LGIs), and CPOs.
