About

BellinghamART offers drawing and painting through weekly classes, workshops, and day camps during winter, spring, and summer breaks. The program includes summer break camps, spring break camps, and winter break camps focused on drawing and painting.

• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Weekly classes offered in three sessions each year – Fall, Winter, and Spring, with additional day camps during winter, spring, and summer breaks

For 25 years, BellinghamART has offered instruction in drawing and painting for children as young as four and a half, teenagers, and adults. The program uses a small classroom mostly for children 4–8 years old and a large classroom for students 8 years old to adult. BellinghamART describes itself as “where everyone can learn to draw and paint,” with drawing as the foundation for all visual art and classes based on the idea that anyone, at any age, can learn to draw and paint. The stated mission is to offer approachable and encouraging art instruction for children, teens, and adults wanting tools to confidently create art, in a supportive environment that is free of competition and other distractions and that emphasizes slowing down, focusing attention, and tapping into the creative side.

BellinghamART was founded by Lynn Zimmerman, who began teaching art in her daughter Emily’s fourth grade classroom in 1998 after seeing the need for more art in public schools. Lynn opened BellinghamART and, after retiring in 2020, passed the school on to her daughter Emily, who has been involved since the beginning. The leadership now includes Emily, an artist and graphic designer whose experience includes oil painting, mural painting, teaching art, graphic design, and freelance art and design work. Teachers at BellinghamART are all artists outside of the school, come from a range of backgrounds, and specialize in different art mediums and ages. According to the program, some of Lynn’s students have gone on to art schools and become professional artists, while others have gone from feeling hopeless at drawing to having the confidence to draw and paint on their own.
