BellinghamART, 1701 Ellis St., Bellingham, WA 98225
About
BellinghamART Classes and Camps focuses on drawing and painting. The program offers weekly classes as well as day camps during winter, spring, and summer breaks. It also runs workshops in addition to its regular classes and camps.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Currently enrolling for Winter Session Art Classes, starting the second week of January; three sessions each year (Fall, Winter, Spring), plus summer, spring, and winter break camps
For 25 years, BellinghamART has offered instruction in drawing and painting for children as young as four and a half, teenagers, and adults. The program uses a small classroom mostly for children 4–8 years old and a large classroom for students 8 years old to adult. The mission of BellinghamART is to provide approachable and encouraging art instruction for children, teens, and adults wanting the tools to confidently create art, with a focus on drawing as the foundation for all visual art. The mission states that learning the basics gives students the skills and confidence for creative expression, improved problem solving, and pride in their artistic accomplishments, and that the classes reflect the conviction that anyone, at any age, can learn to draw and paint. The mission also states that the environment is supportive, free of competition and other distractions, and that students learn to slow down, focus their attention, and tap into their creative side.
Back in 1998, seeing the need for more art in public schools, founder Lynn Zimmerman began teaching art in her daughter Emily’s fourth grade classroom. Lynn retired in 2020 and passed the school on to her daughter Emily. The leadership team includes Lynn Zimmerman as founder and Emily as the current leader. Emily is an artist and graphic designer who has worked as an oil painter, painted murals, worked as an art teacher and graphic designer, and worked freelance as an artist and designer. BellinghamART has a range of teachers who are all artists outside of the school, and they come from a range of backgrounds and specialize in different art mediums and ages.
