For over 136 years, the YMCA of the Fox Cities has been a unifying force in the Fox Valley, with local roots going back to 1887 when Frank Harwood and other community leaders started the YMCA in Appleton, following the founding of the YMCA by George Williams in 1844. The organization states its mission as putting Christian principles into practice by promoting youth, adult and family activities that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The YMCA of the Fox Cities operates as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) social services organization and describes itself as offering health, hope and opportunity. It notes that thousands of volunteers, donors, leaders and partners across the country are involved with the Y, and that Outagamie County partners with the YMCA to bring a childcare center to the Brewster Street Campus. The YMCA highlights several features connected to its programs, including YMCA360 virtual on-demand and live options for families, three 24/7 Wellness Centers, and a Membership For All Assistance program, and states a commitment to belonging guided by Christian principles and core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, welcoming all individuals and aiming for every person to feel valued, included and supported. According to its own description, through its work and commitment to its mission, the YMCA saves and changes lives, builds character, fosters collaborations, and helps people experience the love of God.
