• Ages: 5–18 years old
Since its founding in 1992, Our Next Generation has provided academic tutoring, enrichment programming, and social support to thousands of students in one of Milwaukee’s most challenged communities. Our Next Generation was incorporated as a non-profit in 1993 with a mission to serve neighborhood children with programs focused on improving educational outcomes and life skills. The organization provides after-school and summer academic enrichment and personal development programs for more than 1,000 youth and their families and offers academic support and enrichment programs for students from kindergarten through high school in central Milwaukee.
Programs are described as taking a holistic view of the needs of children and young adults and creating a nurturing environment where children feel welcomed, safe, and valued. The programs foster meaningful and sustained one-on-one relationships between students and their volunteer mentors and expand students’ horizons by exposing them to a variety of enriching environments and potential future careers. High School Connections provides teenagers with a structured curriculum, a supervised environment for social activities, and opportunities for workforce training and soft skill development. Learning Through the Arts incorporates learning through art in academic programming and develops hands-on creative workshops, and during the summer, students participate in a balance of focused academics and enrichment activities.
Our Next Generation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, community-based organization, and its Outbound Learning program is described as award winning. The organization builds a collaborative network of parents, families, teachers, volunteers, and staff to support each student’s needs and invests students in protecting, improving, and taking pride in their neighborhood and local community. Outbound Learning works with corporate and community partners. One student, Kasim, shared, “I was inspired to do this painting with everything going on in the world. I wanted to be a light, a beacon, that takes what I've learned in the past to make things better in the future.”
