Since 1952, Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute (OSRUI) has welcomed tens of thousands of campers. The camp’s leadership team includes Director Beth Rodin and Senior Assistant Director Lina Wallace. OSRUI’s mission states that it is an open and safe Jewish community dedicated to welcoming and valuing every individual, with an intentional camp community rooted in openness, inclusivity, sensitivity, Jewish tradition, and the belief that all people are B’tzelem Elohim – created in God’s image. The mission also states that OSRUI is unique because of its focus on Jewish learning, intertwining the development of Jewish identity with the joys of summer camp.
According to the mission statement, OSRUI lives Jewish values of Ometz (Perseverance), Kavod (Respect), Tsumet Lev (Really Listening), Derech Eretz (Doing the Right Thing), and Chesed (Kindness). The camp describes itself as a warm, welcoming Jewish community where campers build relationships face-to-face, coming together to laugh, play, sing, and support each other, and as a strong, supportive Jewish community that campers return to summer after summer. OSRUI has a Camp Care team made up of mental, social, and emotional health professionals who know camp and know kids. As part of its community involvement and connections, OSRUI is part of the Union for Reform Judaism family of camps and youth programs.
OSRUI offers prospective family webinars via Zoom, tours of camp with one of the Directors, and family programs throughout the year that can introduce families to OSRUI. Parent testimonials describe positive experiences with horseback riding, camper–counselor relationships, communication, orientation, drop-off, and how children felt at camp, including comments about feeling treated as individuals and wanting to return in future summers.
