River Bend Nature Center Programs

River Bend Nature Center Programs include outdoor activities such as paddling a canoe, cross-country skiing, participating in a guided bird watch, and hiking. The programs take place in a setting that includes river-bottom land, ponds, upland hardwoods, and miles of hiking trails, where most species of birds and animals native to southeast Wisconsin can be found on the property. The setting is described as very accessible and comfortable for both novices and experienced outdoors people.

River Bend Nature Center, Inc., is a non-profit corporation formed to rescue River Bend and to continue and expand the mission of outdoor recreation and environmental education. River Bend Nature Center experience has been part of the citizens of Racine County since the time when John F. Kennedy was President, and for almost 50 years it was operated by the Racine YWCA. Most volunteers are retired professionals, including teachers, engineers, and skilled trades people possessing many skills. Through a public-private partnership with Racine County, River Bend Nature Center, Inc., operates the center without tax dollars and is self-sustaining through private support, program revenue, special events, and equipment and facilities rental. The center is described as an important amenity of the community and a place to be experienced, enjoyed, and remembered for the next 50 years and beyond.
