The Center for the Visual Arts was founded and incorporated in 1982 and moved to its present location in downtown Wausau on the 400 Block in 1990. Its mission is to engage people in the visual arts and add to the livability of the Wausau regional community. The organization features four professional gallery spaces with eighteen exhibits annually, a reputable school of art, a juried gallery shop, and admission-free galleries. It offers Monthly Family Day at no cost and with no registration, as well as free kids activities at many different events. The Center for the Visual Arts frequently collaborates with community organizations such as the Marathon County Historical Society, Women’s Community, Neighbor’s Place, Blessings in a Backpack, and the Wisconsin Valley Art Association, and participates in events including Wausau Events programs, ChalkFest, and Wausau’s Artrageous Weekend. The Loft Gallery is dedicated to exhibits for local groups such as the Wisconsin Valley Art Association and Wisconsin Visual Artists Guild. The Center for the Visual Arts received the Small Non-Profit Business of the Year Award from the Wausau Area Chamber of Commerce in 2016 and the City Pages “Best Of…” Local Arts Organization Award in 2017.
