• Ages: 3–6 years old
• Schedule: Year-round preschool and 4K wrap-around options Monday–Friday with extended-day hours, plus before and after school care, full-day “Days of No School Care” on listed dates, and a Summer Club running June 10–August 30 with daily programming.
• Price: Session-based monthly rates for before and after school care, weekly fees for preschool and 4K wrap-around, and daily member and non-member rates for Days of No School Care and Summer Club.
The program is part of the YMCA 21st Century Learning Center, which is a collaboration between the YMCA and the Nekoosa School District. It is licensed by the State of Wisconsin as a state-licensed program with quality trained staff. The YMCA states that Kids’ Clubhouse childcare is a safe and fun place to be, with a focus on safety, health and physical activity, social growth, and academic enhancement, and it notes that participation in high-quality afterschool programming has been proven to improve school attendance, academic achievement, graduation rates, and attitudes toward learning. The Y’s four core values of caring, honesty, responsibility, and respect are implemented into lesson planning, and the program description notes that it fosters virtues, life skills, builds self-esteem, and provides homework help.
Students attending two and a half hours of before and after school programs each day are described as gaining the equivalent of nearly two months of learning time. Days of No School Care is a full-day program for children ages 5–6, and families are asked to send a sack lunch, swimsuit, and towel for those days. The YMCA notes that it runs seven before and after school programs that serve nearly 200 families in the community, and during the summer, YMCA Camp Alexander offers day and resident camp experiences for over 500 youth.
The South Wood County YMCA has been serving South Wood County since 1957 and describes itself as a cause-driven non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening communities in spirit, mind, and body. Its mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The broader organization includes three locations that meet community needs in Wisconsin Rapids, Adams, and Port Edwards.
