About
North Star Youth Partnership is a program of Catholic Charities that engages youth through educational, recreational, leadership, and service-learning opportunities. The program offers specific activities such as Teen Maze, Girls & Sports Day, Baby…Ready or Not, Priceless Prom, Safe Sitter®, Safe@Home, Youth Task Force, Teens’ Closet, the Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Program (TAPP), and the Peer Assistance and Leadership Program (PAL). It offers more than ten programs serving youth across Maricopa and Yavapai County.
• Ages: 11–18 years old
North Star Youth Partnership states that it values all youth and wants to empower them to be healthy, self-assured, and involved in their communities, and it strives to nurture youths’ potential through programs that build their self-confidence and the ability to make good choices. The program has been working with Arizona youth since 1997, when Senior Program Manager Diane DeLong was hired to implement the Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Program (TAPP) in Yavapai County, and in 2008 TAPP was renamed to North Star Youth Partnership. North Star Youth Partnership is the only certified Safe Sitter® organization in Northern Arizona.
Peer Assistance and Leadership Program (PAL) participants average about 1,000 hours of community service to their peers and community each year. Over 1,000 items have been donated to Priceless Prom by community members, and Youth Task Force projects have reached over 2,000 of their peers.
Former and current participants describe completing service projects, volunteering in the community, learning about Arizona statistics related to teenage pregnancy, and helping with Teen Maze. One participant reports that Baby…Ready or Not taught her that she was not ready to be a parent and that she wanted to finish school and remain a teen before parenting.
