Future Stars AZ exists to provide opportunities for inner city youth to achieve their goals in higher education with a focus on technology. The organization supports students with mentoring, financial awareness, training, and scholarship searches for school advancement, and provides all supplies for the students. Future Stars AZ practices a strengths-based model with points and awards for students and is looking to develop the next generation of tech supporters.
Future Stars, Inc. was founded in 2008 and is led by a Black, female IT professional who is native to Phoenix. The leadership team includes Founder Shereka Jackson and Board of Directors members Shereka Jackson, Carla Washington, Kim Gathers, and Tyron Benson. Future Stars, Inc. goals include increasing STEM awareness and knowledge for inner city youth, exposing youth of color to STEM, increasing the number of girls that have a STEM career, teaching problem solving and critical thinking skills, and promoting equity in STEM.
Future Stars AZ collaborates with organizations in the community to increase both effectiveness and efficiency, and its programming is attended by 98% minorities. The organization hosts the largest STEM Fair in South Phoenix, and its offerings are hands on and foster free-form learning, creating, and building. Future Stars AZ states that it does whatever the family needs and describes itself as being like “BFFs” to the families it serves, and it takes its programs to the community by partnering with community centers and the communities in which students live.
Parent and partner feedback includes comments that Future Stars, Inc. is “great to work with” and that the team is “passionate,” as shared by former Dysart Community Center Executive Director Jessie Singer. Parent Quentin Colter describes Future Stars as “very exciting and intriguing” to all four of his children and states that, in his opinion, “there is NO better STEM program out here.” Former mentee Debre Jones shares that, through Future Stars and its volunteers, she learned the importance of scholarships and time management and reports that she graduated from South Mountain Community College.
