School of Rock was founded as a single school in Philadelphia, PA, in 1998. Its mission is to be a growing, passionate community dedicated to enriching lives through performance-based music education. The organization uses a patented School of Rock Method music education system and offers performance-based music education that combines one-on-one instruction with group rehearsals, with programs structured to get students on stage performing.

Programs at School of Rock Alameda include the Little Wing program for ages 4–5, the Rookies program for ages 6–7, Rock 101 for beginners ages 8–13, the Performance Program for ages 8–18, a Songwriting program for ages 12 and over, a Recording & Production program for ages 12 and over, the House Band program for ages 18 and under, the AllStars program for ages 17 and under, and an Adult Program for ages 18 and over. Rookies students use simplified rock instruments to learn to play music. Every few months, Performance Program students play at local Alameda music venues in front of a live audience, and every few months, Songwriting students perform or record their original songs, with the Songwriting program culminating in a live showcase where students perform their original compositions in bands at a local music venue. Adult Program students prepare for and play at a live show at a real rock venue in Alameda.
