About
Alameda Vipers Basketball Club offers basketball activities that include AAU basketball, Developmental Level basketball, practices, a Training Day, games, tournaments, and tryouts. All teams practice basketball and follow full high school rules through AAU basketball, with no developmental limitations placed on the game.
• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: The Vipers Club operates year-round with four seasons (Winter Jan–Feb, Spring Mar–May, Summer June–Aug, Fall Sept–Nov), and all teams practice approximately 2.5–3 hours per week.
• Price: Each season the players’ fees are based on factors including gym rentals, insurance, and game and tournament costs; after the team is formed the coach provides the total fee amount to parents, and checks are made payable to Alameda Vipers and collected by the Team Manager.
Alameda Vipers Basketball Club was founded in 2010 and is based in the City of Alameda in Alameda County, California. The club fields girls and boys teams in grades 2 to 12 and offers Developmental Level basketball. A Training Day in addition to regular practice is added after a team is established, and proper club attire at practices and games is required as determined by the coach. Playing time is determined by the coach to meet the needs of the team and the games, and basketballs are provided. All players’ parents or guardians must sign a waiver form to participate in tryouts, and if selected to be on a team, players must obtain an AAU “Added Benefits” membership card to participate in practices and games. The Alameda Vipers membership application is completed online and is provided by the team’s coach after players are accepted onto the team.
The goal of the Vipers organization is to create a foundation for players to develop their individual skills within the structure of team basketball. Viper coaches and trainers have playing experience in AAU, college, and professional leagues, and coaching experience at AAU, middle and high school, and college levels. Background checks are required for all coaches and assistant coaches, and the National AAU conducts criminal background checks on every non-athlete member, including coaches and team parents, before issuing an AAU membership card. The Alameda Vipers is a registered non-profit 501(c)(3) organization and is affiliated with the National Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), Team U.S.A. Youth Development, and the Jr. NBA. The club states that it keeps player fees very low, uses modest uniforms, and focuses on teaching the game of team basketball.
The leadership team includes board members Gary Lym (President, 2010), Marianne Carter (Vice President, 2010), Randy Banaria (Acting Secretary, 2021), Mindi Chen Kao (At-Large, 2013), David Rebanal (At-Large, 2021), and Max Langaard (At-Large, 2021). Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is described as one of the largest sports organizations in the United States, and the club notes that the difference between AAU basketball and other basketball leagues is the use of full high school rules, with no developmental limitations placed on the game, which promotes competitive play and broad exposure to fundamentals and advanced techniques of basketball.
