About

Camp Conrad Chinnock offers age-appropriate arts and crafts, time in the pool during the day and night, canoeing, archery, carnivals, dances, campfires, mountain biking, hikes, and sleeping in the outdoors. Campers also use the 35-foot Activity Adventure Tower for rock climbing, rappelling, the vertical playpen, and a high-rope element. The program includes casual and formal discussions about how diabetes impacts the lives of youth with diabetes.

• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Family camps begin at lunch, run for three nights, and conclude after breakfast on the final day.

Camp Conrad Chinnock is owned and operated by Diabetes Camping and Educational Services, a non-profit organization that serves over 2,500 families annually from various backgrounds in the Southern California area in partnership with the region’s leading hospitals and educational institutions. The primary focus is providing residential camping experiences for youth with Type 1 diabetes and their families, and the camp offers Winter Camp, Youth & Teen Summer Camp, Family Winter Camp, Family Summer Camp, and a T1D Adult Weekend called Survive and Thrive. Youth sessions welcome friends and siblings aged 7–12 to attend as well, teen summer sessions are exclusively for teens living with Type 1 diabetes, and a Counselor-in-Training program is available for ages 17–19 years old. Transition Family Camp is available for children 7 to 12 years old and their families and immediately precedes the first Youth Session.

Transportation to and from Camp Conrad Chinnock is provided for all youth and teen sessions free of charge, and camper drop-offs at camp are not allowed for summer teen and youth sessions; the bus stop is at the Don Day Neighborhood Center at 14501 Live Oak Avenue Fontana, CA 92337. All cabins are fully enclosed and accommodate 8 to 11 youth along with a trained counselor, and during family camps, approximately two families, depending on each of their sizes, generally share a cabin. There is on-site medical staff throughout the entire Family Camp session, and all meals and snacks are carefully planned and provided during Family Camp.

Each session is led by a physician experienced in working with children and young adults with Type 1 diabetes, supported by a team of physicians and nurses. Camp Conrad Chinnock is accredited by the American Camp Association. The mission of Diabetes Camping and Educational Services is to provide a safe, educational, and healthy camping experience to all children and families.

The very first campers arrive in the summer of 1949, and in 1957 a young physician from the University at Loma Linda Hospital contacted the then current director of the YMCA Camp Conrad and asked if he could start a summer camp for children with Type 1 diabetes. The leadership team includes Beth MacAller, Executive Director; Rocky Wilson PhD, Senior Advisor; Jessica Macias, Director of Operations & Administration; Dale Lissy, Camp Manager; Sue Lissy, Food Service Manager; Richard Miller, Information Technology Manager; Michael Tachvosky, PhD, Board President; Dr. Joshua May, MD, Medical Director; Gary Wayland, CPA, Board Treasurer; Dr. Christina Reh, MD, Board Member; and Carole Superfine, MA, CCC, SLP, Board Member. Camp Conrad Chinnock uses a three-tiered fee structure (Early Bird Fee, Regular Fee, Full Fee), offers a restricted campership program to supplement those who cannot afford to pay the camp fee, and allows parents to use a payment plan option to pay the camp fee in several installments. Camp Conrad Chinnock instructs families to pack for camp and not forget the required items on the provided list.
