About

Camp Conrad Chinnock offers recreational, social, and educational opportunities for adolescents and families living with Type 1 diabetes. Campers are taught diabetes self-management skills in a fun, interactive, and safe environment, including how to manage their medication, eat properly, and integrate physical activity into their lifestyle. Programs and events include education, support groups, family retreats, and youth camping programs designed to help each child develop life-saving skills and increase confidence and self-esteem.

• Ages: 6–18 years old

The very first campers arrived in the summer of 1949, and in 1957 a young physician from the University at Loma Linda Hospital contacted the then current director of the YMCA Camp Conrad to start a summer camp for children with Type 1 diabetes. Camp Conrad Chinnock is owned and operated by Diabetes Camping and Educational Services, a non-profit organization, and is under permit from the San Bernardino National Forest. The mission of the program is to provide a safe, educational, and healthy camping experience to all children and families. Diabetes Camping and Educational Services serves over 2,500 families annually from various backgrounds in the Southern California area in partnership with the region’s leading hospitals and educational institutions, and is open to all children and families impacted by Type 1 diabetes while offering numerous opportunities and training for volunteers, medical, and dietary professionals and students. Camp Conrad Chinnock is accredited by the American Camp Association. Leadership and key staff include Executive Director Beth MacAller, Senior Advisor Rocky Wilson PhD, Director of Operations & Administration Jessica Macias, Camp Manager Dale Lissy, Food Service Manager Sue Lissy, Information Technology Manager Richard Miller, Board President Michael Tachvosky, PhD, Medical Director Dr. Joshua May, MD, Board Treasurer Gary Wayland, CPA, Board Member Dr. Christina Reh, MD, and Board Member Carole Superfine, MA, CCC, SLP.
