• Ages: 3–13 years old
• Schedule: Summer STEAM Mini Camps and 3:15 PM – 5:15 PM drop in play are offered in the weeks of June 15–19, June 22–26, June 29–July 3, July 6–10, July 13–17, July 20–24, July 27–31, and August 3–7; drop in play sessions are 2 hours long
• Price: AM, PM or all-day Summer STEAM Mini Camps are priced at $45.00; 3:15 PM – 5:15 PM drop in play is priced at $15.00
The camp schedule is listed as welcome and warm ups first, followed by a building activity, snack, a team building activity, a second building activity, a craft, and free build. Brickspace STEAM Lab & LEGO Creativity Center offers Lego building and STEAM programs that use Next Generation Science Standards, with curriculum developed in-house rather than using a canned program. Camps are available for beginner builders to advanced ones, and lessons are scaffolded so that students can build upon concepts they have learned. Classes are described as creating opportunities for practicing 21st century skills such as critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration, and students design, build, test, and evaluate using set criteria and are encouraged to come up with different solutions. The programs are described as STEAM learning through play, where campers learn by doing through processes of trial and error, success and failure, reflection, and breakthroughs, and students are described as not even knowing they are learning math, science, and engineering concepts while having fun. The programs aspire to help kids build confidence and develop the desire to learn more, and camp activities are described as teaching life skills like creative thinking, perseverance, friendships, communication, team building, and leadership.
BrickSpace is described as a true community center and provides in-school and on-site STEAM programs across the Bay Area. The founder and leader, Fary Koh (also referred to as Ms. Fary), has a Masters of Education from Michigan State University and a BA in English & Linguistics from York University in Toronto, Canada. She led Academic Support Services at UC Berkeley for 5,000 students and began a living and learning program at Berkeley created to support women studying science and engineering, and she has provided after-school and enrichment programs for 12 years. The mission of BrickSpace STEAM camps is to prepare campers for their future with skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication, and the founder advocates for hands-on learning and uses Legos as a tool to facilitate that.
