About
Green Stuff Summer Camp is an active hands-on science day camp where campers learn about plant adaptations and habitat diversity, collect seeds in the Crops of the World Garden, and grow their own plants. Campers become young botanists by examining plants under microscopes, keep a nature journal, and create arts and crafts from plant materials. Daily activities include hunting for garden animals such as birds, butterflies, newts, lizards, and compost critters, hiking and investigating a different part of the Garden each day, discovery walks, animal hunts, stories, science investigations, crafting with plants, and growing seeds.
• Ages: 6–11 years old
• Schedule: One-week sessions, Monday–Friday, with day camp hours generally between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm depending on grade level
• Price: $500–$525 per week, with optional aftercare available for $100
Green Stuff Summer Camp is described as UCBG’s award-winning nature camp and offers a small-group experience with two counselors supervising 10 to 12 children per week. The counselor team includes one lead staffer with a degree and experience in childhood education paired with a well-trained UC Berkeley undergraduate or graduate student in plant sciences, both with experience sharing the natural world with young children. A special Alumni Camper Week is available for returning campers entering grades 5–6, and Green Stuff Seasonal camps run from 9:00 am–2:00 pm. Garden Members receive early access to register, and all registrations are processed through an online system or by phone with a credit card, with Health Form requirements provided to camp families in April.
The University of California Botanical Garden was formally established in 1890, relocated to its current home between 1925 and 1928, and opened to the public in 1974. It features one of the world’s most diverse plant collections, is the third-largest botanical garden in the United States in numbers of species, and groups collections primarily by geographic regions in settings resembling their native habitats. The Garden’s mission includes developing and maintaining a diverse living collection of plants, supporting teaching and worldwide research in plant biology, furthering the conservation of plant diversity, and promoting public understanding and appreciation of plants and the natural environment. As part of UC Berkeley, the Garden is administered by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and is a member of UC Berkeley’s Natural History Museum Consortium, with more than 500 children from local public schools attending free educational tours annually and thousands of adults and children participating in docent-led tours.
The leadership team connected with the Garden includes Director of Collections Andrew Doran, Curator and Conservation Officer Clare Loughran, and Director of Development Mary Canales.
